“Go make the tomb secure” -by William Duncan

This was this year’s Resurrection message of  Robert Duncan, Anglican Archbishop of Pittsburgh. I thought it was very encouraging. I’ve taken the liberty to edit out the Anglican references to make it more expansive to the whole Body of Christ.

“Go make the tomb secure…”

Pilate invites Jerusalem’s leaders to “secure” the tomb of Jesus [Mt.27.62-66].  They “secure” the tomb with a stone, sealant and soldiers.  As if these could contain our Lord…  Their efforts prove inadequate.  Their materials and means turn out to be no match for the One through whom all things were made.

We have so much for which to give thanks.  First and foremost is the cross of Jesus Christ, by which all previous securities are undone, and life comes by death.

There are many tombs which others have tried to “secure” with us inside.  There are also some tombs in which we have been tempted to “secure” ourselves.  None of these tombs hold when Jesus is there.

They can take our buildings and our assets here at home.  They can even take our lives, as in far-flung places like Nigeria and Sudan and Indonesia   But Jesus is with all those who embrace Him above all else, who follow Him to – and through – whatever crosses are asked.

For us as faithful Christians the efforts by others to “secure” our tombs have failed miserably, just as they did with the One we call on as Lord and Savior.  There has been suffering and loss, pain and grief, anxiety and fear – these things have been very real, and demanded our very best efforts, as well as the grace of the Holy Spirit in abundance.  “But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” [1 Cor.15.57].

As I look across the Church this Easter – seeing its life, its vitality, its healing, its unity, its compassion, its forgiveness, its renewal, its multiplication and growth, its international partners, its clear sense of mission, its appreciation of the transforming love of Jesus Christ – I think I am understanding the mystery and the truth of Easter better than I ever have before.  I hope you and yours are too.  With Jesus it is just not possible to “secure” any tomb.  Easter joy and love to all.

Conditions are right! -by Jeremy Caris

This comes by way of the Elijah List. I think it’s a timely and very-well-stated encouragement to deal with our situation as it NOW is rather than waiting for the breakthrough. Not that the breakthrough isn’t coming, but in one parable after another, the Lord taught us to be faithful during the dark seasons as we await the Light.

Conditions are right!

Jeremy Caris

One of the key things that I see God doing right now is re-positioning many Believers who will cooperate with Him, making adjustments that will allow for advancement. If you are in Christ, your conditions are already right. You simply need to allow Him to position you in a way that will enable you to take advantage of the existing opportunities that surround you. I see the grace of Jesus being released to re-position many right now. The details of your particular circumstances may be daunting facts, but God will turn the current circumstances of your life to your advantage. Better than that, He is ready to use your circumstances to His advantage.

It’s tempting to think that perhaps one day in the future the conditions will finally be perfect and then you will be able to settle into God’s ways and His design, but I hear God saying that today is the day. Now is the time to trust God with your future and thereby enter the rest of God. “So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from His” (Hebrews 4:9-10, ESV).

OT: A good place for free online storage space

If you’re looking for a good online storage site, for backing up your data or sharing files for personal or business use, I’ve tried a few and I like DropBox the best. It’s simple and it works. File management is straightforward, unlike some other sites. Their optional free utility will automatically sync your designated folders to your online space. With the utility there’s no limit on file size, and it also can sync to other machines on your network! It’s as easy as dropping your file into your local folder, and DropBox does the rest. It’s worked flawlessly for me so far, and upload rates here are about 1.5Mb/s.
They give 2GB of space for free, but if you use this referral link: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTQ3NTIwNDc5 , both you and I will get an extra 250MB of space. Then, for each friend you bring in you get another 250MB, up to 8GB total – which is a significant amount of space.
I use this for backup. My backup program deposits a passworded zip file into the DropBox folder, then Dropbox automatically uploads it into the cloud. Actually, I just checked out some of their tips and tricks, at http://wiki.dropbox.com/TipsAndTricks , and I see a lot more you can do, including hosting a web site and even running a remote computer. There’s an interesting wiki, and I’m impressed with how closely they work with their user base.
I’m posting this because it seems like a win-win. I have nothing to gain except helping people out and the extra 250MB if anyone signs on.

Smith Wigglesworth ministered from a broken heart

Paul Keith Davis recently related this anecdote about the great Smith Wigglesworth, apostle of faith.

In 1922 Wigglesworth journeyed to New Zealand for a series of healing campaigns. At the time, he was unknown to New Zealand’s leadership, but with great confidence various pastors rented the Wellington Town Hall to host the meetings. To everyone’s delight, the Lord was wonderfully present in power, bringing healing and salvation to scores. The services were so successful that additional meetings were arranged and each was filled to capacity with God healing the most difficult cases of sickness and disease.

At the conclusion of the campaign one of the host pastors, while walking along the seashore with Wigglesworth, asked what his secret was to walking in demonstrations of God’s power. Wigglesworth responded, “I am sorry you asked me that question, but I will answer it. I am a brokenhearted man. My wife who meant everything to me, died 11 years ago. After the funeral I went back and lay on her grave. I wanted to die there. But God spoke to me and told me to rise up and come away. I told Him if He would give me a double portion of the Spirit—my wife’s and my own—I would go and preach the Gospel. God was gracious to me and answered my request. But I sail the high seas alone. I am a lonely man, and many a time all I can do is to weep and weep.”

A broken and contrite heart was the secret to Wigglesworth’s success with God. It is written in Psalm 51:17, “the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.”

As the two men continued walking along New Zealand’s seashore, Wigglesworth emphasized what he carried in God was not to be envied, but instead he envied what the last generation will see. Wigglesworth explained that he had experienced three open visions with the Lord. Two of them were already fulfilled at the time of these meetings in 1922. However, he expressed the third would take place after his death. Wigglesworth explained, “Oh it was amazing! Amazing! I cannot tell God’s secrets, but you will remember what I say—this revival we have had is nothing to what God is yet going to do.”

I find it interesting that such a powerful man in the Spirit would be, at his core, so broken. Smith was extremely direct and plainspoken, and brooked no nonsense. He would send people off the prayer line when he knew they had already received prayer for their healing. Once he actually punched a man several times in order to shake off a tumor. The onlookers were aghast and ready to revolt, but on the third punch the tumor literally dropped to the floor, with the man healed.

Another time Smith was attending a Christmas recital of Handel’s Messiah in a large hall in London. When the choir was done extolling the Hallelujah Chorus, Smith himself exclaimed HALLELUJAH! in a voice that so filled the hall that it made mention in a newspaper music review the next day. This former house plumber was an imposing man in every way.

And yet inside, he was broken. Hosea implores us, ““Come, let us return to the Lord; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up. (Hos 6:1) Sometimes the Lord must allow a great shaking to get our attention. In our brokenness He can minister sanctification of our souls, consecration to Him, and compassion for others, to a depth that can be achieved no other way.

I don’t know the full story of Smith Wigglesworth’s inner life, but his overcoming a broken heart and going on to be so powerful in the Lord gives me encouragement. If he can do it, I can do it, and you can do it too. We have the same Lord, the same Spirit, and a like faith, and the Lord has promised not to give us more than we can bear. Even a broken heart is no match for the imperishable seed that God has implanted in our spirit.

WordPressers and Facebookers, I can only hope this post will make it through intact. I’m posting remotely. Be blessed.

Straighten up, and be healed

When we have a problem, obstacle or hindrance in the spirit, the answer is not to coddle ourselves or adjust downward into permanent workaround mode. The answer is to face the problem square-on. Yes, it may be painful for a season. But that pales in comparison to the pain of a life lived at a subsistence level of accommodation and mediocrity.

God’s perspective on mistakes, failures and missed opportunities -video link added

Satan uses our mistakes, failures and missed opportunities as weapons against us, in an attempt to destroy our faith and effectiveness. For this reason, it is essential that we understand God’s perspective on these things, because His perspective is much better than ours.

To realize your destiny, get rid of negative influences and wrong thinking

It’s critical to Christian growth that we weed out whatever we can that is negative toward God’s will for our lives. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. We must allow nothing to defile that temple or obstruct God’s workings within us.

When God tells us we are forgiven, set free, and uniquely commissioned to do our part in performing His glorious will on earth, our task is to believe and to abide in His purifying and empowering grace, through obedience allowing ourselves to be conformed to the Word. If we allow distractions, if we allow others to come and talk down our calling, these are like weeds choking the seed of the Word, making it of no effect. We soon will lose confidence that we heard God correctly in the first place, or if we still believe, that we can fulfill that to which we are called. We will be diverted and we will make no progress. Valuable time and opportunity will be lost.

When God cut His covenant with Abraham, birds of prey attempted to take away the sacrifice before it could be consumed by God’s holy fire. Abraham rose up and drove the birds away. Abraham was powerless to consummate the covenant himself – God would walk alone through the sacrifice to do that, signifying that He was taking to Himself sole responsibility for bringing about the covenantal promises – but Abraham did have a responsibility to present the sacrifice properly and to protect it from being stolen away.

So too with us. While God alone can bring about the wonderful promises He has given in Christ -promises of peace, eternal life, fruitfulness, and fullness of joy – it is our responsibility to present ourselves with the correct attitude, as a living sacrifice, and to prevent that attitude from being stolen away. If we jealously guard the anointing within us, God will be free to perfect that which concerns us, cause us to triumph, and bring us to higher pastures.

Lately, I’ve been spending time landscaping where I’m living. And I’m doing it the old-fashioned way – with shovel, steel rake, johnson bar and wheelbarrow. There I am, with post-grad credits, having owned and managed a corporation for many years, and I’m grading, trenching, digging out rocks, and clearing brush. And you know what? I am absolutely loving it, every moment (except for the torturous mayflies).

And the reason is God’s sweet presence, and the absence of negativity. The only negativity is that which I allow, and I’m working on that. I’m definitely learning to stand my ground against the devil.

You can have all the power, position, fame and fortune that this world offers. I would rather work a steel rake – if that’s what God has for me to do – than have all of it, if it meant losing God.

As Rees Howells would often say, guard your position of abiding. Nothing is more important to seeing success in God. Do not allow any negative influences to spoil that precious attitude where faith works through love. Where we abandon dead works and instead adopt a willingness that allows God’s power to flow into us.

Sometimes it’s expensive to divest ourselves of negative influences. Relationships may have to be altered or even broken, and codependent relationships are often protected by barriers of fear – fear of confronting and fear of losing the comfort of the relationship.
But it’s worth it. Put God first, and He’ll see to it that all things are added to you. And they’ll be added the right way. They’ll be permanent, and they’ll give peace and joy.

Difficult times are coming. There is no time to lose. Each one of us must be fully reconciled to God if we are walk in joy and be effective. We need to parse our lives carefully, and weed out anything we can that conflicts with God’s design for us.

A Prophetic Passover Message of Love from Messiah -Catherine Brown

An excellent message received via the ElijahList, dealing with different ways we can be hurt, and how to find the power to overcome and turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones.

In Betrayal – “I Love You”

While He was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss Him, but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”—Luke 22:47-48

“Beloved one, I am Love that will not let you go. To those of you who have walked in the pain of betrayal from dear ones you have trusted and loved, I release the grace to overcome such pain and crushing disappointment. My Love is more than you will ever need to forgive betrayal. Reach deep inside of Me and find a place of forgiveness from which to draw upon. Rest your souls in Me. Let Me cover the scars of betrayal with the healing power of My love. Be not battle weary, but allow Me to kiss away the effects of the lies, the greed and the fear from others that led to your betrayal.

“You have shared in My cup of suffering, so that you might also share in My cup of Joy. My heart overflows with love for you. My love is freedom, My love is unchanging and all-powerful in the pulling down of strongholds that would keep you from flowing fully in My grace. My love is your storehouse in times of great need. Child of My heart, I love you; betrayal is overcome by the Cross.”

In Denial – “I Love You”

On the Cross, and in complete control

When he had received the sour wine, Jesus said, “It is completed!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.  -John 19:30

When Jesus cried out, “It is finished”, He wasn’t saying that His personal ordeal was over. He was proclaiming that the task He had been sent to perform had been accomplished. All the suffering and sin of lost man had been poured out on Him, and now the price of our redemption had been eternally secured. The doorway to heaven had been opened, and we had gained the right to become partakers of the Divine nature.

And when Jesus gave up His spirit, He was not overcome by death. In the Greek, paradidomi means “to give into the hands of another; to deliver to one something to keep, use, or take care of; to permit, allow”. And it is recorded in the active tense, meaning that Jesus’ spirit didn’t just leave Him; His task being done, Jesus dismissed His own spirit into the hands of the Father.

Think of that. All during His passion, Jesus was in complete control. Every tearing of flesh by the lictor’s whip, every driving of thorns into his head, each nail, each unending agony of heaving breath while on the Cross – at any time, Jesus could have ended it at will, with one word (see Mt 26.53). He endured the unspeakable agony of not only the physical pain, but far worse, the righteous wrath due our separation from God.

He did it all to free us from the captivity of satan, sin and death, and to reconcile us to Himself forever. As has been written, it wasn’t the nails, it was Jesus’ love that held Him on the Cross – and when He was on the Cross, we were on His mind.

Challenges and victories: Growing in grace and knowledge

It’s been a while since I posted, so I thought I’d try to catch up. This has been the most amazing growth season for me since I was first Saved back in 1980.

In a nutshell, what’s going on is brokenness turning over the fallow ground, necessity sowing seeds of change, and my tears supplying the rain. With the passage of time, “someone warming them from below”, and my reintroduction to the Gospel of Grace, which I once knew but had somehow lost sight of, those seeds have been bearing a rich crop.

One great leap for socialism

A sad day for the nation, as it takes a major step towards socialism. The healthcare bill will do nothing good for medical costs, quality of coverage, the national debt or the economy. It will instead ration care, bankrupt the nation, and prove to be an open door for taxpayer funding of abortion.

Rep. Stupak, who had led prolife opposition to the bill, has fallen into delusion. Accepting as a promise a piece of paper – an Executive Order – from the most pro-abortion president in history, whose first act was to reverse the longstanding prolife Mexico City policy, who during his short term in the Senate was the most pro-abortion member of that chamber, who as president has consistently staffed his administration in every field with radical leftists, is equivalent to the Israelis giving land for peace. Once the land is gone, it is gone, and the peace quickly follows.

Executive orders have a history of abuse and disuse. They can be overridden, they can die by a thousand paper cuts, or they can simply lie unenforced in the back files at the Department of Justice (Eric Holder’s DOJ!). And no executive order will survive even the most frivolous court challenge, if it conflicts with underlying legislation, as this one does.

So at fantasy best, Bart Stupak’s deal plunges the nation into more contention and litigation, with no end in sight. But in reality, the executive order may as well not exist. This bill – which Health Secretary Sebelius has in an unguarded moment admitted allows for pubic funding of abortion (search this blog for abortion or go to youtube, to see the video), will be the basis for a major leap forward in the killing of babies.

Stupak gave a pitiful colloquy with Henry Waxman on the floor, in which they did a Kabuki on how the Democrats would work to make sure that abortion was nowhere part of the bill. Stupak was bent over, wouldn’t look up, and appeared dejected and defeated. Waxman seemed to know that Stupak had been blindly led to slaughter, and couldn’t even look at him as he gave the thinnest promise possible that he would keep good faith on the promise.

I came away from that sad display feeling sorry for Stupak, but in his impassioned defense of the bill later, he sealed his fate on the matter. He could have been a true American hero, but he bargained away babies’ lives for nothing. Planned Parenthood issued a statement hailing the bill as a breakthrough for reproductive healthcare, and the executive order as a “symbolic gesture”. They’re right.

The Republicans, too often known for compromise, did well yesterday. I’m linking to speeches by Paul Ryan and Mike Pence, both principled, insightful and moving. Both men are true patriots with much to give to their country.

As Ryan says, this is not about healthcare, this is about the fundamental principles about which we order our society. For two and a quarter centuries our rights have been derived from God – and emphatically not from man. But now we make government our king and father – just what Jesus warned us against in Matthew 23. The result will be twofold: a spiritual weakening of our population and the loss of freedom, while nothing will be done for healthcare or its costs.

The ironic thing is that what the Democrats say they want is obtainable, but to be sustainable it must be done the right way. The system needs to be opened up to competition. The government needs to get out of the way, and that includes dropping the employer tax break for employee healthcare, which skews the market and shifts all medical care to inefficient insurance. This is basic economics, but like climate science, when guys like Paul Krugman can pull down economic Nobels, you know that the science has been hijacked. And we need massive healthcare tort reform, but the Trail Lawyers being one of their most endowed constituencies, the Dems will not hear of it.

Politics has become a cancer on the nation. Thank God for the good men who are standing and fighting. My prayers are with them, and that America will continue to be a light. Though the nation deserves strong chastisement, God’s grace is greater than sin, and I pray for repentance and restoration. May those who oppose God receive light and truth.

Here’s the Ryan speech. And the one by Pence.

Evolution thrown for a loop

If you didn’t believe – or didn’t know – what the Bible says here, what hope did you have? None. But if you took God at his word, and believed Him rather than the medical scientists, and took your stand for your healing, you may have been laughed at by sophisticates, but you would have had hope.

You would have filled your mind with positive, hopeful, expectant thoughts. You would have prayed affirmations aloud, according to Mark 11, where Jesus tells us to pray believing that we are, right now, as we are praying, receiving. You would be filling your soul with the reality of your healing even before that healing was manifest to the natural eye.

U.S. on the verge

No matter what happens, we who love the Lord are in His very capable hands. He can and will use anything, even the nation stepping off a cliff, to bring about His will. But He always prefers mercy to judgment, and in situations like ours He looks for intercessors to provide justification for pouring out His miraculous saving power. We need to be praying, in faith.

Meekness is not weakness

Jesus’ life was one of continually confronting the status quo that suppressed knowledge of God. He never ran from it, and He never compromised truth in order to keep the peace or be popular. And when the occasion was right, He didn’t shrink back from engaging in a verbal brawl (the “seven woes” on the Pharisees in Mt 23) or even using actual physical force (the cleansing of the temple).
