Human health ultimately comes down to the soil. I’ve read that there is more life under the soil than above it in terms of mass. But today’s soil is nothing more than a dead “growing medium”. It physically anchors the plant and serves as a sponge to deliver water and applied nutrients to the plants, yes. But the applied “-cides” and incomplete nutrition have killed off most of the microbes, insects, and worms, without which plants cannot grow correctly. Bringing the soil back to its original state of teeming life should be our primary goal, everything stems from it.
Even back under the Old Covenant, God required that the soil should be revered. He stipulated that the soil must be allowed to rest one year out of seven. The Lord warned the people that there would be dire consequences to breaking covenant. Among them was:
But if you do not obey me and observe all these commands — “if you reject my statutes and despise my ordinances, and do not observe all my commands — and break my covenant, … “I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw a sword to chase after you. So your land will become desolate, and your cities will become ruins. “Then the land will make up for its Sabbath years during the time it lies desolate, while you are in the land of your enemies. At that time the land will rest and make up for its Sabbaths. “As long as it lies desolate, it will have the rest it did not have during your Sabbaths when you lived there. – Lev 26:14-15, 33-35 CSB
And this indeed happened exactly as forewarned during the Captivity. Rather than respect the soil and love their neighbor, the people deal greedily with both. And so,
He deported those who escaped from the sword to Babylon, and they became servants to him and his sons until the rise of the Persian kingdom. This fulfilled the word of the LORD through Jeremiah, and the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days of the desolation until seventy years were fulfilled.” – 2Ch 36:20-21 CSB
The soil finally got the respect it deserved, but the people paid a high price for their disobedience.
The life is in the soil. We have overworked it and poisoned it, and our sins have come back upon us. RFK’s agenda to set things right is a godsend. Thomas Massie as Sec. Ag. and Joel Salatin of sustainability renown for as his advisor are fantastic choices for the job.
